Can someone tell me the rationale behind this? It makes absolutely no sense at all. Isn't easier for anet to investigate reports if they are made ingame (so that the time and chatlog is recorded) instead of through support?

I think it was done that way to minimise abuse - just think about how it could be used maliciously if you were able to report anyone from anywhere at any time.

Sadly, the spammers caught on to it very fast. They travel rapidly from district to district, spout their garbage once or twice, then skip out before anyone has a chance to report them.

if u were able to report people from any district, people who don't care about being punished for abusing it will abuse it. this also prevents people from spamming "report this guy, he cheated me out of blah blah blah" u actually have to veiw the offence to be able to report if ur required to be in the same dis

They put this restriction in so there would be a time limit on your ability to report. They didn't want someone reporting hours later when the time of the offense would be in question, and they'd have no officient way of going back and finding the text, etc in the chat logs.

The way it is now, the window is smaller, the server/district, etc is known by the system, and Anet can more efficiently look into the matter.

The downside is violators can hop districts. But in the event something is really bad, you can always go through customer support instead of the report feature. Just keep in mind that if your complaint is pithy, you are wasting their time they could be spending on more important things.

YES. This works! It does take a bit more time and effort but it does work. Also, if you report violations through the support system, it is documented in ANet's files. Gaile Gray has said many times before, that TOS violations should be reported via the support ticket system. There are all sorts of issues with the ingame /report system currently, not the least of which is, as has been mentioned, district-hopping to defeat the IG /report system.

But if you go through support won't it be even harder to determine the actual time and location of the offense? Afterall, a significant delay would have occured between the incident and the time it is reported.

Besides, a lot of so called "verbal abuse" doesn't occur in the same district but through PM. Some random guy can keep PMing crap to you and you won't be able to report him. Yes, I can use ignore, but if Anet bothers to ban people for something as trifling as "offensive names" they should apply this to players who send offensive messages too.

All you have to do is tell them what time, location, district, and both your name and the other person's name when you submit a report at the support site. You may also attach a screenshot of the chat window. They will be able to pull the logs if you give them the correct information, regardless of what time you submit a report.

PMs can easily be tracked as well. See above.
